When the sperm cell finally reaches the egg cell, the plasma membranes of the two cells fuse together and the sperm releases its genetic material into the egg.

Description:Data that were presented are reviewed here and discussed with respect to conserved and divergent features of gamete functions. Presentations in this session covered multiple molecules, multiple species, and multiple events of fertilization, and they highlighted several issues concerning the mechanisms of fertilization and evolution as well as species specificity in gamete functions and interactions. In virtually all species, eggs are covered by multiple layers of extracellular vestments; thus, sperm-egg interactions begin with these extracellular layers and then continue at the level of the egg plasma membrane.
